Control Switcher, ES8, Redplate Amp

I was so hoping that I would be able to program channel switching with patches on the Boss ES8 but it is defying my every effort. The amp uses a 5 din cable and has four functions. But it's a cascading style amp so each switch stays on until you turn it off, the "channels" aren't discreet channels but a series of cascading circuits. So it's important that the switches do not turn off anything as each is turned on. I just can't find a way to get Control Switcher to do this . Is it just not possible? Thanks

Hi there,

The ES-8 sends PC messages and the Control Switcher can be set to take either CC or PC messages. For what you are doing, I’d set it to receive PC messages.

Page 7 of the manual has how to set it up for the switching.

Page 10 of the manual has how to change the switching mode, depending how the amp needs to be switched, either latching or momentary (pulse on or pulse on/off) or reverse.

My thinking has changed a bit since I wrote this. But I am able to turn some functions on using PC commands within a patch. Now I'm wishing to use 3 or 4 of the footswitches on the ES8 as proxies for the amp's pedal switches. It's easier to write patches without planning ahead what tone I want on the amp.So I tried to use CTRL 1/2 and 3/4 on the back of the ES8 using breakout adapters to connect four mono cables to the back of the Control Switcher. That didn't work at all. I guess they are only outputs? Okay so back to midi. I can make a system setting to turn switches into my amp switches. But really I finally figured out I need a cable specially made for this amp. The pin assignment is , to me , weird. I'll write to info@voodoolab.com and see if it can be made. Thanks.

I tried writing and calling Voodoo Lab about buying a custom midi cable to connect Control Switcher to my Redplate amp but I can't ever get a reply. Maybe they don't want to offer this service any more? In any case does anybody know of another source for custom cables like that?

What is your amp? You can see if Best-Tronics make a cable for it, RJM used to do them but not anymore. Here’s a link, I didn’t see Redplate amps there so you’d need to see if they can make a custom one.
