Controlling Laney irt studio

Post by Matt Seskus » Mon Mar 18, 2019 12:15 pm

I was wondering if it’s possible to control the Laney irt studio amp head channels (footswitch controls) with the voodoo lab hex via the midi input/outputs. I do not have the amp yet but Just doing some research before I buy a hex.

Hi there Matt,

You won’t be able to do this with a Hex. You can get a Voodoo Labs Control Switcher and a custom cable to do it.

http://www.voodoolab.com/controlswitcher.htm

You’d have to email them about a Custom cable or make your own. Here’s some info on how to make your own:

You can also get a RJM Mini amp Gizmo and the Amplifier interface cable.

Hope this gives you an idea!

This is correct... to control the IRT Studio you would need the Control Switcher. The footswitch jack on the IRT Studio is actually wired exactly the same as our Multi jack so you wouldn't necessarily need a custom made cable as a standard MIDI Cable (with all 5 pins wired) will work.

The HEX can still be used to take care of switching any effects in and out of the signal path. What will you be using as a MIDI Controller?

Was thinking of using the voodoo lab commander. Would that work?

Yes, the Commander will control both a HEX and a Control Switcher to give you 10 presets that select effects and set the amp functions at the same time.

In this setup, both the HEX and the Control Switcher would be set to receive MIDI Program Changes on MIDI Channel 1. Programming your sounds would be done as follows...

1. Recall any Commander preset you want to Edit.
2. Press any of the buttons on the HEX to set which effects should be active for this preset.
3. Press buttons 1 and 6 at the same time on the HEX to store the preset. The Button LEDs will flash to confirm a successful save.
4. Press any of the buttons on the Control Switcher to set the amp sound you want for this preset.
5. Press buttons 1 and 4 at the same time on the Control Switcher to store the preset. The Button LEDs will flash to confirm a successful save.
6. Rock out!
